Book Review – The Broken Girls

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James / Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Synopsis

Vermont, 1950. There’s a place for the girls whom no one wants — the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It’s called Idlewild Hall, and local legend says the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming — until one of them mysteriously disappears…

Vermont, 2014. Twenty years ago, journalist Fiona Sheridan’s elder sister’s body was found in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And although her sister’s boyfriend was tried and convicted of the murder, Fiona can’t stop revisiting the events, unable to shake the feeling that something was never right about the case.

When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during renovations links the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past — and a voice that won’t be silenced…

Thoughts

Dual timelines, an all girls school, murders and ghosts. Loved this book. Kept me interested from start to finish. This was the first book I’ve read by this author but it won’t be my last.

A great spooky read that earned 4 stars from me.

Thoughts

This book started out great. It definitely gave me all the creepy and suspenseful vibes. It actually felt at times as if I was reading 2 completely different stories but as the book progressed it became clear how everything tied together. I was able to figure out one major part of the story well before it was revealed.

Knowing that this story was inspired by real events was very creepy.

A good, quick read that earned 3 stars from me.

Book Review – Not A Happy Family

Not A Happy Family by Shari Lapena / Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Synopsis

In this family, everyone is keeping secrets–especially the dead. Brecken Hill in upstate New York is an expensive place to live. You have to be rich to have a house there. And they don’t come much richer than Fred and Sheila Merton. But even all their money can’t protect them when a killer comes to call. The Mertons are brutally murdered the night after an Easter Dinner with their three adult kids. Who, of course, are devastated.

Or are they? They each stand to inherit millions. They were never a happy family, thanks to their capricious father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of them is more disturbed than anyone knew. Did one of them snap after that dreadful evening? Or was it someone else that night who crept in with the worst of intentions? It must be. After all, if one of your siblings was a psychopath, you’d know.

Wouldn’t you?

Thoughts

What a dysfunctional family! I don’t think anyone knows how to tell the truth for fear of looking guilty. This was the second book I read by this author. The story was filled with twists and turns and was super fast paced. An enjoyable read for sure!

This book earned 4 stars from me.
